G.I. coffeehouses are supportive spaces for active duty U.S. servicemembers who are seeking help in healing from the trauma of war and life in the military, getting the services that they are have been unable to receive while serving (proper medical care, counseling, legal support, etc.), and questioning their time in the military and/or U.S. wars and occupations. The coffeehouses are pro-soldier and anti-war and are working at the frontlines of the G.I. Resistance movement.
Coffee Strong is a veteran-owned, veteran-operated G.I. coffeehouse within 300 meters of the gates of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Washington state. Known as the "Base on the Brink," JBLM has recently been in the news as the base of Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, who is being charged with the murder of 17 Afghan civilians in Kandahar province, Afghanistan in March.
Under the Hood is located outside of Ft. Hood in Texas. Ft. Hood is the most populous U.S. military installation in the world and the Army's busiest troop deployment hub since the 2001 beginning of the Afghanistan war.
Both coffeehouses serve as hubs of Iraq Veterans Against the War's Operation Recovery campaign, which is dedicated to building strong core of active duty servicemember and veteran leaders organizing for the right to refuse deployment for soldiers who experience trauma while in the military.
